Survey: Nearly $160,000 in Productivity Hours Lost Annually on File Storage, Sharing, Access

INDIANAPOLIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–SmartFile, a leader in enterprise file management, surveyed more than 421 IT system administrators in the U.S. about file sharing, storage and access problems. Results of the survey showed that respondents lost an average of $21,899, or 661 IT ticket hours, in productivity costs each year. A small percent are estimated to lose $154,954 annually, or 4,680 ticket hours.
Without sensible, easy-to-access platforms, employees will look for other ways to be productive, often using consumer-grade tools to complete their work. These workarounds, in turn, cause serious financial consequences for enterprises and represent a common need for secure and accessible file platforms, according to SmartFile’s survey study, “Economic Impact of File Sharing and Storage Costs.”
Key findings include:
- 57 percent of system administrators and other IT professionals reported that storage-related issues were consuming up to five hours a week resulting in $8,608 of lost productivity hours annually
- 17 percent of IT system administrators surveyed spent at least 20 hours weekly on resolutions for failed syncing, unapproved file sharing, VPN issues and other file storage obstacles, resulting in a $34,450 productivity loss each year
- Businesses can waste as much as $154,954 each year in productivity and ticket costs related to cloud or on-premises storage of data, unauthorized cloud services, VPN access issues, sync problems and lost or inaccessible files
- In a review of current SmartFile customers, the study found enterprise customers with at least 145 users saved $995,000 annually, as a result of reduction in time spent working with support tickets and maintaining hardware
“Employees demand an intuitive way to do their jobs, and when they can’t easily share and locate their files, they turn to outside tools to get the job done, even if the tools are insecure and noncompliant,” said John Hurley, CEO of SmartFile. “System administrators can combat these issues with a secure, enterprise file management platform that saves time and money.”
