When you’re trying to attract your early customers, sometimes you should do things that won’t eventually scale.

This may seem counter-intuitive, but Paul Graham from Y Combinator provides several examples of companies who have done those unscalable things that have changed the trajectory of their business. This includes crazy ideas like manually recruiting new users, paying extraordinary attention and over-engage with each user, firing customers and doing things by hand rather than automating them.
