IoT ‘Show And Tell’ Has Hoosier Flavor

CARMEL – Three Indiana companies are featured in a traveling exhibit focusing on the Internet of Things that is wrapping up a nationwide tour this month. Carmel-based pi lab, the maker of Edwin The Duck, SteadyServ Technologies and Schlage Lock Co. are part of NXP’s Smarter World Tour, which has been making stops throughout the United States since January. NXP Semiconductors (Nasdaq: NXPI), which organized the tour, makes the chips that powers many of the “smart” products being featured.

Schlage, which is a subsidiary of Ireland-based Allegion plc (NYSE: ALLE), makes smart locks and related hardware. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to invest more than $13 million into its Marion County operations. It has more than 500 employees at its facilities on the county’s east and northeast sides. The project is expected to result in more than 150 jobs over the next four years.

Edwin The Duck, the so-called “Smart Duck,” is a motion-based toy that connects to a mobile app and features educational games, stories and songs. The product from pi labs is a multiple time Mira Award winner and is sold through retailers including Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Best Buy.

SteadyServ bills itself as the first data-as-a-service company for the draft beer industry. The company, which was founded in 2012, says a recent partnership with Intel is an illustration of its rapid growth. Chief Executive Officer Steve Hershberger says the company’s objective is not only to revolutionize how beer is transported and sold, but also to bring usable data to an industry that is severely lacking in it.
